Iringa DC
As part of a Climate Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (CVCA) across the Iringa, Mbeya, and Njombe regions, our team carried out participatory fieldwork in Iringa DC, in the villages of Ilolo Mpya and Mbikimitali.
What a CVCA does
A Climate Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment helps a community understand how climate and livelihood pressures affect their lives, and, just as importantly, what strengths they already have to respond. The aim is not to study the community, but to work alongside it, so the findings belong to the people who will act on them.
How we worked in Iringa DC
We facilitated Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) exercises with separate focus groups of youth, women, elders, and mixed community members, so every voice could be heard. Together we built:
- Seasonal calendars, charting how rainfall, work, and hardship shift through a changing year.
- Daily-activity clocks, revealing who carries which responsibilities, and where the pressure points lie.
- Transect walks, walking the landscape together, including community tree nurseries, to ground the conversation in the place itself.
The result is a community-owned picture of vulnerability and capacity in Iringa DC that can inform resilience strategies built on local realities.
